Description
The gum varies in colour from clear to pale yellow, while the fossilised form is grey-brown. Dammar gum is a triterpenoid resin, containing many triterpenes and their oxidation products that easily oxidises and photoxidizes. Damar varnish is made from gum damar dissolved in turpentine, is majorly used in oil painting. Batik, paints, putty, varnish/shellac, encaustic paints are also made from Gum Damar with other ingredients such as colorants added in required quantities.
Damar batu is stone or pebble-shaped, opaque dammar collected from the ground. Both gum damar and damar batu is used in traditional Ayurvedic medicinal preparations.
Damar Batu is also used by fishers as wood boat putty by way of mixing with kerosene. Both gum damar and damar batu has been used in prepraration of incence as it gives pleasant odour when burnt or heated.
