Palm Oil

(0)

Palm oil is used extensively in food manufacturing as the oil stabilizes and maintains quality, flavour and consistency in processed foods. Palm oil is also used in manufacturing of beauty products, cosmetics and biofuels. Grown and harvested in tropical countries, palm tree cultivation is considered more efficient in terms of land and water usage. The biggest palm oil producers are Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Nigeria, whereas Indonesia produces biodiesel from palm oil.

Description

Palm oil is naturally reddish in color because of its high beta-carotene content. Palm oil extracted from mesocarp ( reddish pulp of the fruit) is 49% saturated when compared to palm kernel oil at 81% and coconut oil at 86% saturated fats levels. Palm oil is one of the few highly saturated vegetable fats. Palm oil is a common cooking ingredient in the tropical belt of Africa, Southeast Asia and parts of Brazil.

Palm oil has gained its popularity due to its low cost and high oxidative stability while used in processed food preparation, making it a preferred substitute for butter and other hydrogenated vegetable oils.

Palm oil is pervasively used in personal care and cleaning products and it provides the foaming agent in majority of soap, shampoo, or detergent products. Around 70% of personal care products including soap, shampoo, makeup, and lotion, contain ingredients derived from palm oil.

Palm oil is used to produce both methyl ester and hydro deoxygenated, which is often blended with other fuels to create palm oil biodiesel blends. Palm oil biodiesel meets the European  EN 14214 standard for biodiesels.
